2012 - #21 – Tullyroan Oval – 17/6/12 |
The second day of the banger weekend and the turn of the Unlimited National bangers, this time with the ProStocks, Lightning Rods and Junior Productions as a supporting act. This was also the first Sunday afternoon meeting at Tullyroan Oval and thankfully the weather had taken a turn for the better and was dry and sunny, up until the end of the DD anyway.
I must admit my eyes lit up a I came up the bank and clapped eyes on the track on the Sunday, after the rain on Saturday night it was looking more like a shale track than a tar track, for one split second I forgot myself and thought I was actually at a shale track, aw well, maybe someday we’ll see a proper shale track on these shores.
In the Juniors there was an opening heat win for Jack Gilpin, Shane McMillan took heat two before Edmund Davis took the honours in the final.
The ProStocks had been drafted in to cover the absent Open Hot Rods and raced for a non-points scoring meeting, they were a little down on numbers than usual with some drivers off racing in Lochgelly, where Ryan Abernethy won the Scottish Open. Stefan McClelland won the opening race with Adrian McKinstry winning heat two and the final.
Ben McKee looked to many to have secured heat one in the lightning rods, but was a lap down, Stephen Emerson took the opening heat win. Heat two in the Lightning Rods went to Brendan McConnell before Colin McEvoy won the Final.
Team Buckle dominated the Unlimited National Banger Irish Open and going into the closing stages held all five of the top places. Booboo snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by running out of petrol on the last lap in his superbly turned out Mk 2 Granada, which I’m informed is quite rare tin, although I passed one on the Westlink on my way to the racing on Saturday so there must be the odd one or two knocking about. David Owens eventually took the honours. The Bangers all comers race was won by Willy Ogilby and a lively Destruction derby went to Darren Gaffney and Stevo McGrath as they both went out in the last action of the day.
