2012 - #40 - Ballymena Raceway - 5/10/12
The last meeting of the year at Ballymena and thankfully another dry one. The stock rod Irish championship seemed quite low on car numbers given the amount of cars that have raced this season, and a big crash on the home straight further cut the field and wiped out some of the main contenders, including new World champion Chris Gordon. In the end Stephen McNeice took the win with Micky McFall second and Derek McMillan third, as they finished. McFall was later excluded from the result as the car failed scrutineering. There has been a bit of a running theme this season of cars being found illegal in scrutineering, some down to their own fault and some being oblivious to what engine builders have done to their engines, or parts they have picked up off the shelf not quite being within the rules. The whole issue has cost us quite a few cars on track as drivers pick up bans and I can’t help but wonder if it is time there was some form of pre-race scrutineering, or a service available for drivers to have their car checked before a race, thus giving the driver the knowledge to have anything changed they need to and avoiding being stripped and banned and keeping more cars on the track for the rest of us to watch. The Gp 2 Lightning Freddie Fleck took the honours in the final having been followed home closely by Jason Clyde. Perhaps just as notable was Brian Edgar debuting the first of the Vauxhall Vectra’s to come into the class, and a superb example it is. In the ProStocks, Gremlin looked to have the final sewn up when the engine went pop down the home straight and then the car looked more like a mobile sauna as it arrived into turn one. In the Open Hot Rods Jay Nevin took the superleague series after Davy Gurney was spun out in lap one of the final, seeing off the chances of a grandstand finish to the series. With that ends the 35th season at Ballymena Raceway, roll on the 36th!
