My First Trip to Autograss |
I’ve been going to Motorsport as long as I can remember, I grew up around F2’s, went with my uncle to all manor of Motorsport when I was growing up, Race meetings, Sprints, Hillclimbs, Rallycross, Rallying, Bikes, Karts, Trials anything with and engine that moved and we went to it. Somehow Autograss was something we never seemed to end up at. I think we went off in search of Autograss a few times, but with vague directions and in poor weather we never found an event and assumed it had been cancelled.
On Saturday, armed with a postcode and a Sat Nav with a knack of finding the most remote roads to send me down, I finally made it to an Autograss meeting, at Down Autograsses meeting outside Banbridge.
I’d love to report on who won what, but I arrived with no idea about it and spent the day being educated by the Grattans and Jonny Teggart. Gary races a buggy (I’m sure it has another name) and Jonny races a class 1, other names I recognised were John and Cecil Haffey from my Rallycross days and I recognised one of the cars, I’m fairly sure sits just up the road from me.
I’d expected more people and more cars, but apparently there was a clashing meeting and some people had gone there.
Since it was my first meeting, I don’t know if it was a good one or a bad one, but I enjoyed the change of scenery for the day and I’ll definitely make more of an effort to get to a meeting again and learn more about it, and who knows I could be bouncing about a field myself soon alongside my oval racing commitments.
