McIlroy. Greer & McNeice take Titles at Aghadowey |
The Thunder Rods and Stock Rods stole the show at Aghadowey Oval on Friday 24th of October.
For once it managed to stay dry for a Friday night meeting at Aghadowey, although there was a few spits of rain and there was quite a heavy shower when I was coming through Kilrea which caused me to ponder just turning and going home again after last week’s delightful weather.
With a big weekend of racing at Tipperary and Cowdenbeath this weekend there was a noticeably smaller crowd.
Robert McIlroy won the Thunder Rod Irish after it was stopped on the last lap when the bumpers started going in. McIlroy had led from the off with Curtis Greer in his mirrors throughout the race, but a push on Greer into the first bend of the last lap seen McIlroy removed from the lead and the race stopped and declared. You could look at the revenge race in one of two ways, some would say it was a bit unsavoury and not in the spirit of rod racing, others would say it was the most entertaining of the night….. I’m in the latter camp.
The Stock Rods points championship went down to the wire with Jonny Cardwell and Stevie McNeice going into the final only separated by a few points with Derek McMillan still in the mix. McMillan got the better draw but with more points to make up he went for a do or die run around the outside of the pack on front of him, had it worked it would possibly have the move of the season, but it didn’t pan out that way and McMillan went backwards, Cardwell and McNeice meanwhile were battling side by side for most of the race, Cardwell’s inside line became his downfall as he got backed up behind Bobbie Johnston which allowed McNeice a run around the outside when Cardwell ended up out of shape, McNeice got the place and took the points championship, up front though Gary Butler was well out on front and took the final win.
Curtis Greer won the 1300 Saloon Northern Ireland Championship, the class set a record for taking the longest time to grid the fewest amount of cars.
